December 2008:
Wartime Christmas Greetings

Nearly a thousand G.C. Murphy Co. employees served in the armed forces during World War II. For those men and women in uniform — some of them in far-off, unfriendly places — mail from home was always a welcome sight.

Murphy's kept in touch throughout the war with a series of newsletters that updated them on their other co-workers in the service. And Murphy's sent regular gifts like magazines, cash and war bonds to keep up their morale.

This Christmas card was sent one year to G.C. Murphy Co. personnel in the service. Though undated, the content suggests the card was sent in 1944.

The card — made in the form of a booklet — includes this greeting from Murphy Co. Chairman Walter C. Shaw Sr. and President Paul L. Sample.

On another page, there’s a greeting from Murphy Co. Controller John Krut, along with a poem:

According to the news we hear
The year won’t be so old
Before you’re back to hear us cheer
Because you’ve knocked the Axis cold!

So carry on the Murphy Spirit
No matter where you are today ...
The spirit that will win you friends
From Philly to Bombay.

But until the fight is over
And you’re back ... just let us say.
“A very merry Christmas, Pal,
And a happier New Year’s Day!”
